Habitat Services

Felix Wildlife Services can also provide services for those looking to enhance wildlife habitat on their properties. With degrees in Wildlife Sciences from Penn State University, Felix Wildlife Services owner, Jon Felix, is passionate about wildlife and the conservation of threatened wildlife species.

For example, Felix Wildlife Services can recommend site selection and install bat houses for clients interested in providing roost sites for bats. Bat populations in Pennsylvania and around the country are suffering from the disease White Nose Syndrome. Installed in conjunction with a bat removal project, bat houses can offer a roost site to keep bats nearby a client’s home to maintain the benefits bats provide by eating many different insect pests while removing their refuse from the clients living space. In this manner, clients can help play an important role in conservation while resolving their conflict with nuisance wildlife.

Common Species Removed

BATS

Pennsylvania has nine different species of bats. The most common bat species in our area is the big brown bat (Eptesicus fuscus). Bats are nocturnal and shy animals that try to avoid human contact in most situations. Unfortunately, they often reside in man-made structures, which results in conflict. During the summer months, colonies of female bats often roost in attics or barns in order to raise their young pups. In order to protect these young, Felix Wildlife Services never removes bats during the summer. Instead, we wait to do bat removals in early spring and fall. Our bat removal process strives to protect both bats and humans by allowing the bats to leave on their own in early spring and fall through one-way valves and preventing their return by bat-proofing the structure.

STRIPED SKUNKS

Skunks can cause a great deal of havoc with their extremely offensive odor, which can last for weeks if not properly removed. The skunk odor comes from glands. Once sprayed, these odors can reach the skunks intended targets- sometimes the household dog - up to 12 feet away, A skunk's favorite habitat in suburbia is underneath decks, sheds, or barns. This timid animal is mostly nocturnal and tries to avoid human conflict. The late winter months (February and March) are the skunk's mating season. Human “conflicts” may occur when the female skunk sprays the male because she is not receptive to him. Because this usually takes place near a populated dwelling, significant discomfort for clients follows.

GROUNDHOGS

Groundhogs can be extremely disruptive little bulldozers that will excavate large holes and tunnels underneath decks, sheds, or barns and in open fields. Groundhogs have 3 to 6 pups in the spring. The groundhog’s favorite types of food include flowers, fruits, and vegetables. The groundhog’s herbaceous appetite leads to the destruction of many home gardens. People have tried using bricks, broken glass, mothballs, and bubble gum in attempts to get the groundhog to leave. The only successful method to deter groundhogs is to have them trapped and removed. Buried fencing can also be installed to prevent future conflicts.

SQUIRRELS

In central Pennsylvania, you will find gray squirrels, red squirrels, flying squirrels, and the occasional fox squirrel. Each species of squirrel brings their own problems to homeowners including: entering and nesting in attics, chewing on wires, or crawling around in walls during the middle of the night. The flying squirrel is nocturnal and rarely seen. It is smaller than a gray squirrel and has skin between its front and hind legs, which allow it to glide between trees. Flying squirrels live in colonies, which can include up to 2 dozen members. Many times, the noises heard in the middle of night are flying squirrels. In most situations, squirrels can be trapped and relocated to wild places. However, exclusion barriers and habitat modification are often needed in and around the affected dwelling to prevent future squirrel invasions.

SNAKES AND SNAPPING TURTLES

Snakes can be live-trapped, and hand caught. Common species encountered include garter snakes, common water snakes, and black rat snakes. These snakes have been caught both inside and outside client’s homes and garages. Felix Wildlife Services prefers the humane trapping and relocation of snakes whenever possible.

Snapping Turtles live in ponds, streams, and ornamental waterworks. Even though 60% of their diet is vegetation, snapping turtle will prey on ducklings and goslings. Felix Wildlife Services uses specially designed floating turtle traps that can catch several turtles at a time.

BIRDS

Many bird species are protected by federal law and cannot be handled without specific permits. However, non-native species such as European starlings, English sparrows, and pigeons can be trapped, humanely dispatched, or have nests removed at any time. Many times, starlings and sparrows nest in bathroom or dryer vents of homes creating fire and health hazards. Pigeons and sparrows also commonly roost on building eaves or ledges and create a public health hazard with their droppings. Woodpeckers can cause thousands of dollars of damage to homes. There are specialized bird deterrent products that are effective in keeping unwanted bird species away. Felix Wildlife Services is trained and certified in the use of these products.

RACCOONS

Often referred to as 'masked bandits', the raccoon is a common nuisance in suburban and urban settings. Raccoons are omnivores, meaning they eat fruits, vegetables, and meats. They also use human refuse and unattended pet dishes for food sources. Raccoons give birth to 3 to 5 kits in March and April, and they often use attics and garages for nesting places.
